Where I went #
I arrived into Bueng Kan city just before sunset. I dumped my bag at the hotel and ran down to the local night markets along the Mekong River like a giddy kid. Before coming, I had heard countless good reviews about these markets, and I was not disappointed.
Amazing location along the Mekong (albeit, with some sort of large-scale construction going on between the markets and the river currently). I arrived during golden hour, and the entire place just shone.
The markets themselves are two or three rows of stalls. Predominately food, but plenty of options, from clothes, electronics, footwear and some knickknacks too. All up, the markets would be about a kilometre long with many, MANY food options available.
What I liked #
- I loved this market for its variety. It was rare to see more than two types of the same food stall.
- Big open area, located directly on the mighty Mekong River.
- Dedicated pedestrian area. No cars or motorbikes to battle with.
- Some break out areas provided to sit down and enjoy your food.
What I ate #
My focus tonight was ’luuk chin’ (or small meatballs on a stick) and other satay style meats. I grabbed some fresh fruit to snacks on over the coming days and some sweet buns!
No idea what I spent, but it’s a typical local market, so everything was good value
